Cognitivescientistshavestatedtheassumptionthatthehumanmindhasmentalrepresentations[StanfordUniversity,2004].Theserepresentationsarebrokendownintofive categories;concepts,logicalrepresentations,rules,analogies,andimages.Eachofthese mentalrepresentationscorrespondstodifferenttypesofmentalprocedures.Forexample, deductiveandinductiveproceduresareappliedtologicalrepresentationstoproduceinferences;retrieval,mapping,andadaptationareappliedtoanalogiestoproducebehaviours; andimagesareconstructedandmanipulatedtoproducebehaviours.Inthecaseof'concepts',theyareviewedassetsoftypicalfeaturesthatmatchtherealworld.Aprocedure likematchingisappliedtotheseconceptstoproducebehaviours.Conceptsarenotonly consideredassimpleideas(i.e.eachconceptisonlyasetoffeatures)butalsoapowerful platformforanysystemtocreateanunderstandingoftheworldaroundit.Comparing thehumanmindtoacomputer,thementalrepresentationsareanalogoustocomputerdata structuresandArtificialIntelligencehasattemptedtocreatemethodstoreflectthehuman behaviour/mentalprocedurethatoperatesonthesedata.
