It is therefore recommended that CM patients with any or combination of the documented clinical and laboratory predictors of outcome should be given prompt and appropriate management especially during the first 48 hours of admission during which most CM patients died.

Dr Isaac Oluwayemi is a lecturer with the Department of Paediatrics, faculty of clinical sciences, college of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria. He graduated from University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1997 and is a fellow of the West African College of Physician. He is married to Margaret Oluwayemi and blessed with children
