This outstanding text provides a concise, accessible and stimulating introduction to the relationships between cities and economies in both the historical and global contexts. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which large cities have led, and at the same time adapted to, economic shifts at the national and international level. The book: reviews different economic activities that spurred urban growth and decline in history; focuses on how large cities in developed countries have adapted to and have led a globalizing world economy; and, investigates large cites in developing countries with a particular focus on the links between capital cities and their national economies. Throughout, emphasis is placed on comparing current economic issues and policies of large cities in the developed world to those of large cities in the developing world. Case studies are used to illuminate the urban economic issues in question and key questions and resources are provided at the end of each chapter.
