It is, then, a history of the destruction of the Jewish community of Vienna and an examination of the performance of the Jewish leadership in its dealings with the Nazis on behalf of the Jews. Leonard H. Ehrlich earned his doctorate degree at Yale University; he was professor of Judaic Studies, professor of Philosophy, and the first director of the Judaic Studies Program (later Department of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies) at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
