Peu de temps après avoir obtenu sa licence de pilote en tant que cadet de l'Aviation royale du Canada, John abandonne le génie aérospatial à l'Université Carleton pour poursuivre des études (et une carrière) en finances d'entreprise. Quelques années plus tard, sa femme lui achète un télescope de Dobson de douze pouces pour Noël (pour être juste, elle a reçu des bottes en cuir). Il se joint ensuite à la Mount Diablo Astronomical Society, faisant du bénévolat jusqu'à quatre nuits par semaine sous le ciel sans nuages de la Californie. À l'époque de la MDAS, il commence à écrire des essais pour le magazine du club, Diablo MoonWatch, avant de publier son premier livre, 50 Objets à voir depuis un petit télescope. En 2016, John quitte le monde des affaires américain. Il est maintenant étudiant à temps plein en astrophysique à Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse.
