Alfred E. Brehm, geb. 1829 in Thüringen, wurde nach vielen Expeditionsreisen 1863 Zoodirektor in Hamburg, 1869 gründete er das Berliner Aquarium. Alfred Brehm verfasste viele Aufsätze und Bücher, u.a. Reiseskizzen aus Nordafrika (1853) und Das Leben der Vögel (1861). Die mehrbändige Ausgabe von Brehms Tierleben (1864-69), die umgehend zu einem großen Publikumserfolg wurde, machte ihn weltberühmt. Brehm starb 1884 in Renthendorf/Thüringen.
