Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) is the timber species of greatest economic value in Tropical America. Plants of S. macrophylla are strongly attacked by caterpillars of H. grandella, which feed on fruits, flowers and cambium of many meliaceae, and the greatest damage occurs when they penetrate the terminal shoots of young plants, because successive infestations result in stunting and permanent and irreversible deformation of the stem of the plant. Augusto Pedroso - Titulaire d'un diplôme en agronomie de l'Université rurale fédérale de l'Amazonie (2008). Il est titulaire d'un master en agronomie de la même université (2011). Il occupe actuellement le poste d'agronome au campus de Paragominas de l'UFRA et d'étudiant en doctorat dans le cadre du programme de troisième cycle en agronomie de l'UFRA.
