The author was inspired to write about her ancestors' Black settlements, and through research, she discovered much more. This book only scratches the surface of the rich history of Black settlements in Southern Illinois. Kimberly France is a graduate of Howard University in the District of Columbia and Southern Illinois University in her native Carbondale.
