Whenever nature has a difficult task to perform it can be expected that a metal ion or a cluster of such ions is employed. Metal ions are indispensable for the integrity of biological structures and the catalysis of biological reactions. Knowledge about their mode of action, their uptake in the cell, their handling and their storage is important for the development of new pharmaceuticals.
