In developing countries local environmental problems associated with energy use remain at least as pressing as they were in industrialized countries 50 or 100 years ago. In developing countries local environmental problems associated with energy use remain at least as pressing as they were in industrialized countries 50 or 100 years ago. Furthermore, it is the poor who suffer most severely from such problems; because it is they who, for lack of access to better alternatives, are forced to rely up on the most inefficient and polluting source of energy services. This study addresses social, economic and environmental benefits of biogas energy production and use among HHs. The study revealed that, HHs were not using biogas for cooking and lighting before biogas installation. Instead the surveyed households were using traditional fuels in high amount. In the surveyed HHs, before biogas installation, the total annual GHG emission was 5,459 kgCO2e/HH/year. Each biogas plant reduced the emission to 1612kgCO2e/HH/year. Biogas installation provided each biogas household to save on average 144 minutes per day; and an annual saving of Birr 3833.28. Therefore, this book will give up to date information about biogas energy production and use to policy makers, experts, researchers and other partners in the energy sector.
