In December 1944, the Allies had no inkling of a full-blown German offensive through the Ardennes. Here is the story of the first day of the Battle of the Bulge, with an overview and description of German plans and efforts to mask their military buildup. It relates the start of the offensive with artillery bombardment, followed by German armor and infantry. Maps and timelines capture every precious hour when the Western front hung in the balance.
