Alex has been a passionate reader all her life and remembers many life lessons learnt from reading books at a young age. She has also been a frustrated artist since childhood, and could always be caught sketching animals.Having been a nurse for 45 years and a serial volunteer at her three children's schools for many of these, she has seen the impact that feeling friendless and isolated can have on young children. The idea of using Basil, her mini dachshund, as a hero in her book came to her as she watched how very young people were drawn to him and related to him as another small person, and illustrating her own books is Alex's way of further conveying the message of her writing to children who are learning to read.Basil's news is that there is a friend for everyone, no matter what shape or size.
