Obesity became a worldwide epidemic at the end of the 20th century, with exponential growth rates in the western part of the world, especially in developing countries, such as Brazil. The high cost of the disease to health systems, especially for the treatment of severe obesity (better known as morbid obesity) and its comorbidities represents a considerable part of the total health expenses in Brazil.
