THE CURRENT STATE OF THE ART of several aspects of asphaltene is presented in this volume. It documents the proceedings of the Internationl Symposium on Asphaltene Particles in Fossil Fuel Exploration, Recovery, Refining and Production Processes sponsored by the Fine particle Society (FPS). This meeting was held il1 Las vegas, Nevada, July 13 -17, 1992. The symposium upon which this volume is based was organized in four sessions emphasizing various basic and applied aspects of research on asphaltene technology. Major topics discussed involve surface phenomena of asphaltene, processed and unprocessed bitumen, asphaltene effect on natural and accelerated ageing of bitumens, asphaltene conversion, theoretical aspects of asphaltenes and interactions of asphaltene colloids in organic solvents. This edition includes eighteen selected papers presented at the symposium. These papers are divided in four broad categories: (1) Bitumen and Coal-Derived Asphaltenes, (2) Asphalt and Asphalteneconversion, (3) Surface and Colloidal Aspects of Asphaltenes, and (4) Thermodynamic and Molecular Aspects of Asphaltenes.
Bitumen And Coal-Derived Asphaltenes.- Asphaltene-Viscosity Relationship of Processed and Unprocessesd Bitumen.- Natural and Accelerated Ageing of Bitumens: Effects of Asphaltene.- Field-Scale Numerical Simulation of Bitumen Mobilization with Solvent Slugs.- Asphaltene Conversion During Coal-Bitumen Co-Processing.- Asphalt And Asphaltene Conversion.- Classification of Asphalt Types by Asphaltene Aromaticity.- Sluge Formation During Heavy Oil Conversion.- Upgrading from Petroleum and Coal-Derived Asphaltenes.- Chemical Aspects of Environmentally Processed Asphalt.- Surface And Colloidal Aspects Of Asphaltenes.- Surface Activity and Dynamics of Asphaltenes.- Role of Asphaltenes in Recovering Heavy Oil Through Micro-Bubble Generation.- The Effect of Surfactants to the Conversion of Coal and Coal-Derived Asphaltenes in Coal Liquefaction Process.- Structure and Interaction of Asphaltene Colloids in Organic Solvents.- Diffusion and Structural Studies of Asphaltenes and their Implications for Resid Upgrading.- Thermodynamic And Molecular Aspects Of Asphaltenes.- The Study of Molecular Attractions in the Asphalt System by Solubility Parameter.- Solvation of Ratawi Asphaltenes in Vacuum Residue.- Air-Blown Asphalt Made from Room Temperature and Ambient Pressure Under ultrasound.- An Improved Molecular Thermodynamic Model of Asphaltene Equilibria.- Fractionation of Asphalt by Thin-Layer Chromatography Interfaced with Flame Ionization Detector (TLC-FID) and Subsequent Characterization by FTIR.- Author Index.
