John Henry Newman war Geistlicher an der Universitätskirche St. Mary und Professor am Oriel College in Oxford. Sein Lebensprogramm war der Kampf gegen den religiösen Liberalismus und die Erneuerung der anglikanischen Staatskirche Englands. Nach Jahren intensiven Ringens und Betens trat er 1845 zur römisch-katholische Kirche über. Newmans Leben nach der Konversion war von Anfeindungen auf anglikanischer und Misstrauen auf katholischer Seite geprägt. Durch seine große Aufrichtigkeit, seine hohe Intellektualität und seine Veröffentlichungen erwarb sich Newman zunehmend Achtung und Respekt. Nach seiner Priesterweihe in Rom gründete er das erste Oratorium des hl. Philip Neri in Birmingham und wurde 1879 von Papst Leo XIII zum Kardinal ernannt. John Henry Kardinal Newman gehört zu den bedeutendsten Theologen und Glaubens-gestalten der Neuzeit und wird von vielen auch als "Kirchenvater der Neuzeit" bezeichnet.
