The present study aims to highlight the role of oxidative stress in Diabetes mellitus and investigate the effects of Cinnamomum zeylanicum in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes by employing animal models. Cinnamomum zeylanicum water extract was evaluated as an antioxidant in two main areas: first, the detection of compounds in the plant extract and their evaluation in vitro in free radical control, and second, the assessment of the extract in vivo by monitoring the effects of oxidative stress and antioxidants after inducing oxidative stress.The data from animal studies revealed beneficial effects of cinnamon treatment in diabetic mice by improving its ameliorative effect on oxidative stress in the Treatment group (D). The results also suggest a possible positive influence of Cinnamomum zeylanicum on pancreas fibrosis prevention and insulin secretion in a diabetic animal. Moreover, Cinnamomum zeylanicum water extract ingestion seemed to exert a beneficial hypoglycemic effect in diabetic subjects, the high phenolic compounds and vitamins, elements content, and anti-oxidant capacity may contribute to these health benefits.
