The antibiotic resistance pattern of bacteria isolated from chlorinated (treated) and untreated water was assessed with a view to ascertain the effectiveness of the quality of water employed in the city. Water samples were collected from taps, bore-hole, well and stream. The samples were labelled as A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and L. A total of 7 bacterial species were isolated from the various samples analysed, the bacteria isolated from treated water are Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa and Bacillus subtilis; and the bacteria…mehr

A total of 7 bacterial species were isolated from the various samples analysed, the bacteria isolated from treated water are Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa and Bacillus subtilis; and the bacteria isolated from untreated water are Klebsiella pneumonia, Streptococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogene, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa and Bacillus subtilis. Heterotrophic plate count (HPC), total enteric bacterial count and total coliform count using the most probable number (MPN) as well as some physiochemical parameters such as pH, temperature, free residual chlorine, turbidity, total hardness, chloride ion, sulphate ion and nitrates were determined.
