Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) published her first book, Anne of Green Gables in 1908. An immediate success, it established Montgomery's career, and she wrote and published material, including numerous sequels to Anne, for the rest of her life. By the time of death in 1942 she had published twenty novels, hundreds of short stories and poems, and thirty essays.
