Confucio, literalmente "Maestro Kong", fue un reconocido pensador chino cuya doctrina recibe el nombre de confucianismo. Procedente de una familia noble arruinada, a lo largo de su vida alternó periodos en los que ejerció como maestro con otros durante los cuales fue funcionario del pequeño estado de Lu. A los cincuenta años comenzó sus enseñanzas. Viajaba solo de un lado a otro instruyendo a los contados discípulos que se reunían en torno a él. Su fama como hombre de saber y carácter, con gran veneración hacia las ideas y costumbres tradicionales, pronto se propagó por el principado de Lu, y luego a toda China.
