Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, geb. 17.8.1932 in Trinidad, lebt seit 1950 in Großbritannien. Der Romancier, Reiseschriftsteller und Journalist indischer Herkunft gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der englischsprachigen Literatur. Seine Romane 'Ein Haus für Mr. Biswas' und 'An der Biegung des großen Flusses' sowie das Sachbuch 'Eine islamische Reise' waren Welterfolge. Die meisten seiner Werke wurden ins Deutsche übersetzt. 2001 wurde V. S. Naipaul der Literatur-Nobelpreis verliehen.
