Curtis Sittenfeld is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels  Prep, The Man of My Dreams, American Wife, Sisterland, and Eligible, and the story collection You Think It, I’ll Say It, which have been translated into thirty languages. Her short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, The Washington Post Magazine, Esquire, and The Best American Short Stories , of which she was the 2020 guest editor. Her nonfiction has appeared in  The New York Times, The Atlantic, Time, and Vanity Fair, and on public radio’s This American Life.

Fast frei erfunden

Eine Frau betrachtet ihren Mann, der neben ihr liegt und schläft. Sie fragt sich, was sie falsch gemacht hat, und denkt zurück: an ihre ersten Treffen, als sie, eine scheue Schulbibliothekarin, sich mit seiner wohlhabenden Familie schwertat, damals, bevor er seine Karriere als Politiker begann. Weil aber der Mann der amerikanische Präsident ist und die Frau die First Lady, ist hier nichts einfach. Als Curtis Sittenfelds Roman letztes Jahr in Amerika erschien, war rasch die Rede vom Schlüsselroman über die Präsidentschaft George W. Bushs. Die Figur der First Lady, die in der Rückschau ihr Leben erzählt, ist zwar, wie Sittenfeld versichert, "frei erfunden", aber doch von der Lebensgeschichte einer ganz bestimmten "inspiriert", von Laura Bush. Bereits vor dem Erscheinen war von Enthüllungen und Skandalen zu lesen gewesen, dabei ist Alice Blackwell nur das fiktionale Porträt einer Frau an der Seite des mächtigsten Mannes der Welt, und ihre Erzählung die einer Frau, die sich fragt, wie sie einen fundamentalen Widerspruch aushalten soll: dass sie ihren Mann liebt, seine politischen Ansichten aber nicht teilt und ihre Überzeugungen mit ihrer Rolle in der Öffentlichkeit kollidieren. Wie schon Joe Kleins "Primary Colors" über den Wahlkampf von Bill Clinton ist auch hier die Reaktion auf solche Polit-Fiktion interessanter als das Buch selbst. "American Wife", meinte jedenfalls eine amerikanische Kritikerin, sei die Art von Buch, mit dem es sich Laura Bush gemütlich machen würde, wenn es nicht über Laura Bush wäre.
