Large numbers of C. gariepinus larvae can be reared from egg and sperm collected from few parents. The early larvae will stay for two days in a clean environment till they finish their stored food inherited from the parent and transferred to their growing tank. Immediately after transfer the early larvae need to have live feed to grow into fry in a hatchery. Then the fry grows into fingerlings and juveniles in an artificial pond before they are recruited for farming and/or enhancing different waterbodies. Currently, there is a huge demand for quality fingerlings for different production systems and enhancing natural and artificial waters. Very well equipped hatchery with better management is required to rear C. gariepinus larvae and grow quality fingerlings to meet this high demand. This calls for much specialization; one facility carrying out induced spawning and rearing of fry and grow fingerings at the same farm facility and the other on growing table size fish for local consumption.
