Dramaturgo por excelencia de las letras españolas, se le considera uno de los mayores exponentes del teatro español del Siglo de Oro. Con casi doscientas obras entre autos sacramentales, loas, entremeses y comedias, su producción se centra tanto en la religión como en el amor y el honor, temas estrella de su época y que él elevó a nuevas cotas de calidad y sensibilidad.
