Apotheker and Jako first introduced commercial operating microscope to dentistry in 1981. Microsurgery was introduced to the field of periodontics in 1992. A continuing education course was subsequently conferred by Shanelec and Tibbetts on periodontal microsurgery at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology held in 1993.
