World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II created devastation across the world and drove millions of immigrants to the United States. Many generations relive their families' strength, courage, loyalty, and grit. We tell and re-tell stories. We look at frayed black-and-white photographs. We read letters written by soldiers to their loved ones. We write our own memories of stories we've been told. We collaborate with family members to write memoirs and books. We try to recreate history. After our cousin Stephanie Tramdack Cash passed away in 2017, we cousins began talking about a project to celebrate our Latvian heritage. Our goal was to document and preserve the Tramdack family history, and to make it accessible for future generations. To paraphrase Stephanie's brother Philip, without this, all of our memories and information will float away down the river. As this project evolved, so did the topics. Memories surfaced and came together to tell our family's story. Although this book focuses on the most impactful events from 1906 through World War II, information about our culture is included, as well as brief profiles of our parents, aunts, uncles, and ourselves. The Family Tree goes back to 1840 and includes our generation and the next.
