" Teenage Toby lived with his grandmother. When she died suddenly, arrangements were made for him to spend the summer in Dallas, Texas, with his only living relative, his uncle Mike. " Teenage Toby lived with his grandmother. When she died suddenly, arrangements were made for him to spend the summer in Dallas, Texas, with his only living relative, his uncle Mike. While waiting at the bus terminal, he noticed two kids trying to hide from a dirty, unkempt man, who smelled of booze. When the man was out of sight, Toby asked the teenage girl and her younger brother why the man was looking for them. The girl, Cindy, hesitantly explained that he was their step father, he beat their mother who was now in the hospital, and he said he would kill them for calling 911 and turning him in. They were clearly scared and Toby wanted to help if he could. Toby convinced Cindy and her brother, Tommy, to come with him to Dallas, where he was sure Uncle Mike would know what to do. There was a long wait before their bus departure time, so the three kids ran back to Cindy and Tommy's house where they quickly packed some clothes and found what money they could. Back at the bus terminal they purchased one-way tickets to Dallas, and their Summer of Adventure began."

Jacqueline White Unruh grew up in Southern California. Her father was a bus driver and her mother worked for the Board of Education. She is the third of five children and has always loved the outdoors and sports of all kinds, with swimming and diving being her favorites. She was very young when her parents took her and her siblings camping along the Kern River and she has dearly loved camping ever since.

She married Ed in 1960 and they joined her family often at Lake Mead where they camped, swam, fished, boated and water skied. In 1969 they moved with their four children to Kansas, near Wichita. First they rented a little farm in Kechi, from there they purchased a ten acre farm in Sedgwick. A large creek with deep banks ran through their back yard where the kids could fish, swim, tube and jump into the water from a high rope swing.

Jackie and Ed took many camping trips throughout the US and have been in every state except North Carolina and Hawaii, with two trips driving their RV through parts of Alaska.

Currently she and Ed live at Cheney Lake State Park working as Camp Hosts.
