A mysterious phone call leads to a clandestine meeting with a stranger. It changed Mona and her daughters' lives forever. Mona should have sensed something was different about her husband's family. They owned the largest waste collection business in New England, but it was the other businesses they were involved in that she didn't pay attention to. When her father-in-law was gunned down outside a restaurant, she learned the whole truth but still made no changes in her life. She learned through a stranger that her husband was dead. With new identities, she was told to take her children and run for their lives. Only the strong resolve of a mother protecting her children could survive this situation. Arriving in a small northern Michigan town was the first of many challenges for the family. The children weren't happy with the rural surroundings and Mona felt isolated and alone. Soon the warmth of the town provided the entire family with a sense of community they had never experienced before. Establishing a new life while worrying about being targets of the mob was her challenge. She didn't have a clue who was out to kill her and for all she knew it might even be the stranger that helped her run. The new friends she made could provide support but would it be enough to protect her, the children or her new friends from future dangers. She had no alternative but to trust a man with the truth. A local conservation officer becomes one person willing to stand between her and the killers. Could he save her or for that matter cold he save himself.
