Désiré-Joseph Mercier (1851 ¿ 1926), Kardinal, gehört zu den bedeutendsten Neuscholastikern. Seine Vorlesungen am philosophischen Lehrstuhl in Mecheln (Belgien) stoßen auf große Resonanz und so er wird zum ersten Präsidenten des neu gegründeten Institut Supérieur de Philosophie in Löwen ernannt. Er gründet eine der ersten Zeitschriften für neoscholastische Philosophie, die noch heute unter dem Titel ¿Revue philosophique de Louvain¿ fortbesteht. Kardinal Mercier und das Institut sind besonders für ihre aristotelisch orientierte Interpretation Thomas von Aquins bekannt geworden.
