The year is 1873. Gold is discovered at the Palmer River in far North Queensland. Stricken by gold fever, driven by greed & ignorance thousands of miners wreak havoc on the land. When worlds collide, there are casualties. Emmaline Gidley-King is fourteen years old when she is banished by her mother from her beloved vineyard home & life of affluence in the Yarra Valley. She is set adrift in the company of distant relatives travelling on the infamous Palmer River Track. When tragedy strikes, Emmaline is swept up into the melting-pot of chaos and bloodshed. Terrified, lost and alone in the bush; she is ill prepared for what lies ahead. Generations on, Ellie Jamieson's betrayal comes in a different, but equally damaging guise. Inflicted with a vain, self-interested and spiteful mother her childhood has been more like a battle field. Throw in a cheating boyfriend & losing her job all in one day and Ellie's self- esteem is at an all- time low. While she finds herself at a crossroads, nothing can dampen her irreverent humour & acerbic wit. Written with precision & a deep understanding of the importance of self-worth. A Hint of Darkness is a passionate, & historically revealing story. The novel explores the concept that Love; in whatever form, is essential to human happiness. Lori has proven herself to be a talented and engaging writer with a gift for the intuitive. Her fictional novel is told with astute historical accuracy and insight into the challenges still facing women in determining their place in society.
