The study explores and analyses the concept of affirmative action and the programmes linked to it.It has been discovered that in all societes different social groups of people are treated differently and some tend to benefit at the expense of others. Therefore,it is imperative that affirmative action programmes are put in place so that there is limited or no discrimination. It has been revealed that though different societies may uderstand affirmative action differently, the core of the matter remains that these policies are aimed at redressing the imbalances that were created in the past. The study also traced the historical development of affirmative action and it has been revealed that the roots are found deeply entrenched in the 18th Century Enlightenment Period in America. Again this study looked at the implementation of affirmative action programmes in Zimbabwe.
