The 1995 Baku Metro fire broke out in Azerbaijan's capital Baku on 28 October, about 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) between the stations Ulduz and Nariman Narimanov, killing 289 people and injuring 265 people. The fire was found to be caused by electrical malfunction, but the possibility of deliberate action was not excluded. Although 95% of people who evacuated the train survived, the fire remains the world's deadliest subway disaster. On account of the disaster, the Swedish transport authorities of Stockholm decided to reduce the risk for a similar accident and to limit the effects if one happens.
