Mit 19 hat Walker zwar endlich eine Familie gefunden, die ihn von Herzen liebt, jedoch möchte er endlich Licht ins Dunkel seiner Vergangenheit bringen und macht sich in Toronto auf die Suche nach seiner Mutter.
Abwechselnd begleitet der Leser Walker und Krista, die den jungen Mann bei seinen Nachforschungen unterstützt, und lernt parallel dazu Bobby kennen, der schon als Kind Spaß daran hatte, Tiere – und später auch Menschen – zu quälen. Nach und nach laufen diese beiden Handlungsstränge zusammen, bis es am Ende zum spannenden, aber auch recht blutigen und verhältnismäßig kurzen Finale kommt.
Der Aufbau des Buches ist geschickt konstruiert. Während die Suche von Walker und Krista eher langsam anläuft und streckenweise etwas vor sich hin dümpelt, halten die Einschübe über Bobby den Leser bei der Stange, denn obwohl von Beginn an klar ist, dass dieser ein Psychopath ist, der in irgendeiner Verbindung zu Walker’s Vergangenheit stehen muss, bleiben die näheren Zusammenhänge bis zum Schluss unklar. Selbst als ich meinte, die Lösung gefunden zu haben, wurde ich noch einmal überrascht.
Die Charaktere sind nicht unbedingt flach, weisen aber auch keine besondere Tiefe auf. Zwar fieberte ich durchaus mit ihnen mit, hatte aber auch ständig das Gefühl, dass sie sehr leicht austauschbar wären. Auch die Ursachen für Bobby’s sadistische Art werden lediglich angerissen, allerdings fällt dies nicht sonderlich negativ auf, da der Roman ja vorrangig unterhalten soll.
So ist auch die Sprache einfach gehalten und lässt sich insgesamt flüssig lesen, auch wenn ich während der Lektüre vereinzelt auf etwas holprige Passagen gestoßen bin, welche u.U. aber auch auf die Übersetzung zurückzuführen sein können.
FAZIT: Ein ordentlicher Thriller, der noch zu überraschen vermag, sich aber auch nicht allzu tief ins Gedächtnis gräbt.
