Wenn nicht Damon, wer da? Gemeinsam jagen sie einen unbekannten Dritten und gemeinsam sollen sie sterben, als sie ihm endlich gegenüber stehen.
Man glaubt kaum, wie weit sich diese Buchreihe entwickelt hat. Anfangs noch romantischer Vampire Teenager Liebesroman, entwickelte es sich doch recht schnell zu einen mysteriösen Typus, wo die Hauptcharaktere durch Zufall Blutsauger sind....und dennoch die Menschheit retten (wollen).
Die Charaktere sind mittlerweile nicht mehr so stereotyp und platt wie im ersten Teil. Es zeigte sich schon im vorangegangenen Band, dass Damon doch recht nett sein kann und seine Liebe zu Elena größer war als der Bruderhass. Und aus Liebe zu ihr ist er sogar gewillt mit seinem weichherzigen Bruder Stefan zusammen zu arbeiten. Leider wird er oft verkannt und keiner will ihm so recht glauben und vertrauen – selbst Stefan nicht. Die Beweggründe bleiben oft auch etwas im Diffusen. Aber mit Hilfe der warmblütigen Mädchen und Matt ist eine generelle Zusammenarbeit dann doch möglich und wer weiß: vielleicht kann Elena wieder zurück geholt werden und es gibt so eine Art Happy End.
