Charles Fenn covered the Far East for Life magazine before the war. As a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, Fenn was assigned to the OSS in 1943 and later to the Air Ground Aid Services. For his wartime service he was awarded the U.S. Soldier's Medal of Valor, the Bronze Star, and the citation from Gen. William Donovan.
