ITALO CALVINO (1923-1985) attained worldwide renown as one of the twentieth century's greatest storytellers. Born in Cuba, he was raised in San Remo, Italy, and later lived in Turin, Paris, Rome, and elsewhere. Among his many works are Invisible Cities, If on a winter's night a traveler, The Baron in the Trees, and other novels, as well as numerous collections of fiction, folktales, criticism, and essays. His works have been translated into dozens of languages.

Wovon noch keiner zu erzählen wagte, keine Hieroglyphen, keine Bibel, kein Lukrez, kein Borges: Wie es vor Unzeiten im Universum zugegangen sein muss. Nicht am Anfang, sondern vor allen Anfängen, als alles in der Schwebe, schwarz nicht von weiß, oben nicht von unten, und Punkt nicht von Komma und Strich geschieden war. Alles war anders, und anders blickte man auch auf alles, was danach geschah – vor und nach dem Urknall, der die Welt zur Welt brachte und mit ihr alles, was seither dort schiefging, oder auch nicht. In Calvinos „Cosmicomics“ – einer bezaubernden Naturgeschichte der dritten Art – erzählt davon eine amorphe Figur namens Qfxfq, die mal als Qualle, mal als Lurch, mal als Molekül oder auch mal als der letzte Dinosaurier auftritt, der uns – seinen Nachfahren, Zuhörern, Lesern – vom Aussterben seiner Art erzählt.
