Moral virtue and mental health sustain a complex relationship. Pestana unravels each concept and the nature of their perfection, revealing several ways in which the concepts overlap in theory and in practice. However, in the final chapter he explains precisely how moral virtue and mental health radically differ. The study concludes with an account of why the idea of mental health has come to replace the idea of virtue in much of our evaluations of character.

Rezensionen
"Demonstrating the practical 'cash value' of careful philosophical analysis, Mark Pestana mounts a succinct and thought-provoking argument against our tendency to replace the language of moral evaluation with that of psychological adjustment. He uncovers problems buried in language we use daily and, in so doing, invites us to more careful reflection on the moral life." (Gilbert Meilaender, Theology Department, Valparaiso University)
"Caught between the rock of a rapidly expanding neuro-science and the hard place of traditional notions of responsibility, the human mind is under pressure as never before. This clear and scholarly book draws on a sophisticated understanding of virtue theory to produce a refreshingly novel analysis of the will and mental illness. Mark Pestana is the Alasdair MacIntyre of mental health." (KWM Fulford, Professor of Philosophy & Mental Health, University of Warwick and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, University of Oxford)
