Das besondere Verhältnis von Russland und Gauß steht im Zentrum dieses Bandes. Dokumentiert und beschrieben wird die wichtige Rolle von Gauß seit Beginn seiner Laufbahn für die Wissenschaft in Russland und die überaus große Bedeutung, die Russland für Gauß' wissenschaftliches Schaffen zukommt. Vorgestellt werden 17 in Russland tätige Wissenschaftler, mit denen Gauß korrespondierte und oft auch unmittelbar zusammenarbeitete. Mit ihnen tauschte Gauß wissenschaftliche Ideen und Daten zu Mathematik, Astronomie, Geodäsie und Physik aus. Neben der hier veröffentlichten Korrespondenz zwischen Gauß und diesen Gelehrten werden weitere Dokumente und Materialien veröffentlicht, die Gauß' Beziehung zu Russland behandeln. Von besonderem Interesse dürfte die Auswertung der Göttinger Gauß-Bibliothek sein, in welcher sich die Rossica und wissenschaftlichen Werke befinden, die Gauß aus Russland zugesandt bekam. Der betrachtete Zeitraum reicht von 1799 bis zu Gauß' Tod 1855.
