Titus Petronius Arbiter ist etwa zu Beginn der christlichen Zeitrechnung geboren. Werk wie Leben des epikureischen Skeptikers sind von zahllosen Exzessen geprägt. Nach ausschweifenden Jahren als Politiker, Lebemann und offizieller Geschmacksrichter ("arbiter elegantiae") am Hof Kaiser Neros, war er schließlich in eine Verschwörung verwickelt. Um 66 n. Chr. zum Tode verurteilt, zelebrierte er einen lustvollen Freitod.
