Autorenporträt
Alexandre Dumas der Ältere wurde im Jahr 1802 als Alexandre Dary de la Pailleterie in Villars-Cotterets bei Soissons als Sohn eines napoleonischen Generals geboren. Früh verwaist und arm, doch von seinen Talenten überzeugt, blickt er nach Paris, um dort sein Glück zu versuchen. Der kleine Notariatsschreiber will zum Theater. Die Stücke, die er zunächst schreibt, sind heute vergessen. Doch zwanzig Jahre später, 1844, ist er der König des literarischen Feuilletons. Alexandre Dumas starb 1870 in Puys (Dieppe).
