Barlaam and Ioasaph is a Christian hagiographical text traditionally attributed to Saint John of Damascus. The story is a Christianized version of a tale with roots in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. The narrative follows Ioasaph, a young prince who is shielded from the harsh realities of life by his father, King Abenner, in an effort to prevent him from encountering suffering or religious teachings. Despite the king's efforts, Ioasaph meets the hermit Barlaam, who introduces him to Christianity. As Ioasaph learns the Christian faith, he undergoes a spiritual awakening and renounces his royal lifestyle. He chooses to follow the path of asceticism and righteousness, ultimately converting many people, including his father. The text explores themes of spiritual transformation, the renunciation of worldly pleasures, and the triumph of Christian faith over paganism.
