Christmas was not always about cosy fires, cheerful songs and pretending to enjoy a family board game.
For generations, it was also a season for gathering after dark, lowering the lamps and telling stories of haunted houses, restless dead, mysterious strangers and things best left undisturbed. The Ghosts of Christmas Past is the story of how the Christmas ghost story became a tradition. Tracing its development from old winter fireside storytelling through the Victorian age of festive magazines and annuals, and on to radio, television, and modern Christmas broadcasting, Michael White explores the strange history of our seasonal fascination with the supernatural. This is not an anthology of ghost stories, but a lively history of the tradition itself: how publishers discovered that readers enjoyed being frightened at Christmas, how winter storytelling became associated with ghosts, why the Victorian period proved such fertile ground for supernatural fiction, and how the custom survived long after the world that created it had disappeared. Along the way, the book explores the changing shape of the Christmas ghost story, the readers who embraced it, the publishers who encouraged it, and the cultural traditions that helped make a tale of terror feel perfectly at home beside a blazing festive fire. Warm, witty and atmospheric, The Ghosts of Christmas Past reveals how Christmas became haunted, and why the darkest nights of the year still seem to demand a ghost beside the fire. Perfect for readers of literary history, Victorian culture, supernatural fiction and the darker side of Christmas, this is an ideal festive gift for anyone who has ever wondered why Christmas and ghost stories belong together.Noch keine Bewertungen vorhanden
