Carroway Island has never lost a bishop. It does not intend to start now.
The annual Blessing of the Fleet ought to be a dignified occasion: a gathering of boats, a few solemn words, and a safe return to shore. But dignity has always had trouble finding a permanent berth on Carroway Island.
This year, the visiting bishop brings a fondness for peach brandyand a supply to ward off the coastal chill. As he and his captain attend to their refreshments, their boat begins taking on water. The spectators notice. The Ladies Auxiliary notices. The two men aboard remain remarkably untroubled.
With the ceremony listing badly and the Ladies Auxiliary's efforts to restore order creating fresh confusion, Crazy Jack Mercy finds himself facing a rescue that was certainly not on the program.
The Blessing of the Fleet is a warm, mischievous Carroway Island short story about maritime tradition, human frailty, and a community determined to preserve its dignity under increasingly damp circumstances.
Come for the blessing. Stay for the salvage.
