Arnhem, September 1944. Eleven days that will test every assumption made in England.
Operation Market Garden has been designed to open a road through occupied Holland and carry the Allied advance across the Rhine. On the maps, the objectives are clear. On the ground, nothing will remain simple for long.
Lieutenant Piers St Aubyn, intelligence officer with the 156th Parachute Battalion, prepares to enter a battle he can understand only through reports already growing old. His task is to separate what is known from what men merely hope is true-before decisions have to be made from information that may already be wrong.
Private James Sims, a mortarman with 2nd Parachute Battalion, jumps into Holland as Number Fifteen in his aircraft stick. Soon the neat sequence of training gives way to marching, digging, carrying ammunition and fighting among the streets and houses of Arnhem.
Private Jim Longson, a Vickers machine-gunner with the Border Regiment, arrives by glider with a weapon that is only as effective as the men, ammunition and sheer physical effort required to keep it in action.
Their paths form three different views of the same battle: headquarters and intelligence, the exposed mortar positions around Arnhem Bridge, and the heavy-weapons crews fighting west of the town.
As the operation unfolds day by day, distances that looked insignificant on a map become roads that must be fought over, woods that hide friend and enemy alike, and a river that increasingly divides those who can be reached from those who cannot.
Based on documented events and told from the ground level of the battle, The Eleventh Day is a character-driven military historical novel about airborne soldiers caught inside one of the Second World War's most ambitious operations-not as legend would remember it, but as the men themselves might have experienced it: through exhaustion, uncertainty, humour, fear, friendship and the determination to keep going when the plan begins to come apart.
