The old stories never disappeared; they're waiting for us to discover them anew.
A banshee imprisoned for two centuries is freed by a child's curious hand and she wants revenge. A boy hides inside a carriage made of human skin as the Dullahan carries him toward the land of the dead. An American tourist ignores a warning about the hungry grass on Slieve Gullion and never makes it home. A laundrette becomes the site of a death omen when a dead mother appears, washing blood-soaked clothes. Ancient gods buried beneath a ringfort wake when a farmer's chainsaw cuts through sacred hawthorns.
In this chilling anthology, nine Irish authors reimagine the folklore of their homeland as contemporary folk horror. The old horrors do what they do best: the the Cóiste Bodhar carries the newly dead, the Bean-Nighe washes the clothes of those about to die, and fairy forts conceal prisons older than humanity itself.
These are the stories Ireland tells in the dark, when the fire runs low and the wind sounds like keening. Within you'll find stories of grief and vengeance, of land that remembers and of the ancient things among us still waiting.
Featuring stories of the Dullahan, The Bean-Nighe, the Féar Gortach, and more from Irish folklore, written by Beth Ann Wilson, David O'Mahony, Derek Power, Erin Curran, J.M. Keenan, J.A.C Violet, Ken McGrath, Lulu Brown & Victor Holmes.
