In this collection of sermons, Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson explores paradoxes inherent in Christian belief: Christ as true man and true God; man as an individual in the unified body that is the Church, home of both authority and liberty; the joy and sorrow, peace and war, meekness and violence, inseparable in a fallen world. Each meditation begins with two verses from Scripture that seem to clash. If these apparent contradictions in the life of the faithful seem strange, Benson reminds us they were also present in the life of Christ: "the Paradoxes of the Gospel and the key to the Paradoxes of Catholicism is one and the same-that the Life that produces them is at once Divine and Human." Benson is best known for his novels such as the apocalyptic Lord of the World and the historical fictions such as Come Rack! Come Rope!, The King's Achievement, and By What Authority? But as a convert from Anglicanism and part of the movement of English intelligentsia towards Catholicism at the turn of the twentieth century, Benson is well suited to articulate and plumb these facets of the Faith. His other writings on spirituality include Spiritual Letters, also available from Os Justi Press.
