Between 1949 and 1951, a group of French archaeologists conducted excavations north of the Ptolemaic temple, near the remains of the workers' village at Deir el-Medina. There, they found a large pit-around fifty metres deep and thirty metres wide-whose exact purpose has never been conclusively determined.
Inside it, numerous discarded papyrus documents were uncovered, including records belonging to the village judge during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses. Among the many cases was one in which a worker accused his colleague, a man named Bashad, of stealing his axe. Bashad, however, completely denied the accusation.
Much later, while Egyptian archaeologists were clearing Bashad's tomb, they discovered the very axe at the centre of the case. What is the story behind that axe? Inspired by this true account, the book follows the passage of years and centuries until the stolen axe is finally found.
