Walt Whitman's Song of Myself is one of the defining works of American poetry - an expansive celebration of the individual, the body, nature, democracy and humanity's place within the living world. This distinctive bilingual edition presents Whitman's poem in its original English alongside Canto de Mim Mesmo, a new Portuguese translation by Vitor Vicente. Conceived as a meeting of two languages and two voices, the Portuguese and English texts occupy opposite sides of the same physical book. The edition is preceded by Vicente's Manifesto em Canto Próprio / A Manifesto in Its Own Song, which introduces the rebirth of Recanto Escuro through a dialogue with Whitman's words and ideas. Both a new encounter with a landmark of nineteenth-century American literature and a celebration of literary translation, this edition invites Portuguese- and English-language readers to approach Whitman from either direction - and meet in the middle.
