Through this fictional monopoly, Shaw examines the uneasy relationship between political authority and economic power, asking whether elected governments can truly act independently when private interests possess the resources to shape national decisions.
Written in 1928 and first performed in 1929, The Apple Cart is a witty and intellectually charged political satire.
