This book is set in 1889. The author traveled to Egypt as an explorer and researcher, remaining there for a full year. During a trip to Upper Egypt, he managed to purchase a female mummy from Girga. He took it with him and presented it to the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. The American consul, Schuler, also acquired two mummies and sent them to San Francisco, but all were lost in the devastating fire that engulfed the city in 1906.
In 1898, Jeremiah Lynch traveled to Alaska in search of gold with a crew of one hundred men. He endured the harsh conditions for three years, devising a new method of gold prospecting and returning with a considerable fortune. Just as he had swum in the Nile, he also swum in the nearly frozen Yukon River.
He returned to Egypt in 1912, searching for another mummy to present to his beloved club, but he was unable to do so because all mummies discovered at that time were being sent to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. But he learned that one of the deceased pashas kept a mummy in his palace, so he managed to convince his sons to let him buy it. He succeeded in acquiring it, and with the help and mediation of Lord Kitchener, he was able to send it to San Francisco to be housed in his favorite club.
