A comedy-mystery of manners reminiscent of the improvised dramas of Mike Leigh. From the cartoonist of Juliette: The Ghosts Return in Spring, comes her first ever graphic novel that placed her at the forefront of French comics.
Vincent is in a rut. He lives in an apartment below his kooky mother and isn’t sure if his girlfriend is ever coming back from her internship in Paris. Every day is the same, he wakes up and goes to his barbershop, returns home and checks on his mom and goes to bed. Sometimes he visits his cousin. Until one day, by chance he visits a shop and the cashier seems familiar. “Who is she? I know her.” He researches her and finds nothing. He starts following her and finds out where she lives. And when she sings in the choir and where she drinks—sipping whiskies until she ambles home. She walks and walks through the city and he follows seeing places he’d never known.
Aude is young and bored and she too repeats the same day over and over again. Until one day she realizes that a man is following her aunt. That man is Vincent and that aunt is Rosalie Bloom. The spies know they can’t know their subjects but feel they do anyways. Is Vincent a psychopath? Is Aude a heartless prankster? Is Rosalie Bloom a sad lonely woman or a contented loner? Nobody is really sure until one day they all come clean.
Jourdy’s comics are detailed like classic French painting—gorgeous, pulsating, floral.
